How to move back to new york

"If you can make here, then don't leave!"

How I did it: I started by asking for a transfer from work. Company policy was that if you worked there for 1 year, you could transfer within the company. When my year was up, I started researching other options in the company. I spoke with HR and they were willing to let me keep my job and work out of the New York office.

Lessons & tips: Speak up for what you want. You may not always get it but you will never get it, if you don't ask at all.

It took me 2 years.

"I used to get so upset because I couldn't cook, but really, I just never tried."

How I did it: See my blog, I wrote a whole post! It explains why I thought I couldn't cook, how I started, what I did. I even photographed the whole experience and put some of the photos on my blog, here:

Lessons & tips: Don't just assume you can't do something!

Resources:

I would like to thank cooks.com for the recipe and Met Food Store for the ingredients, and most of all, my family for taste testing.

It took me 1 day.

How to write an autobiography

"I am glad that I did it, but it took me forever."

How I did it: I researched other people's bios used some of what they had that was relevant to me and put in my information. I still don't love it but I finished it. When I was done, I asked a writer to help me edit it and give me other suggestions on improving it.

Lessons & tips: Don't let your fear of failure stop you from doing what you want. Do your best, ask for help, and be proud that you accomplished what you were able to.

It took me 11 months.

I have been trying very hard to keep up journaling but I am guilty of not always posting what I write. It is a fear of perfection that stops me. Also, I have been working on a few other projects. I am going to start my own company. I am excited and scared. I am working on all the details as we speak and will keep posting as they become more permanent.

I have also started a blog! It is complete with links to my portfolio, information about me, and...the 1001th thing on my list! That is to journal the experience of completing 1000 things. If you are interested in following me the link is: http://jennibeth.wordpress.com/  So far, I am very happy with the results.

Onward & Upward.

Till next time.

Ddub's Logo Contest

I participated in Donnie's logo contest. You can't even imagine how excited I was to make it to the semi-finals. Here are the logos that I submitted...

I really like the Ddub's Soldier logo and was not super crazy about the rest of them. (but that was my opinion). Sometimes when you are designing your original idea takes on a completely different form. So those are what I ended up with. They aren't so bad, are they?

There was a huge disappointment the night Donnie twittered to tell us to be on the lookout for the release form. I kept refreshing my email over and over but no form showed up. I went to work the next day and when I opened my email there it was. This is how excited I was...

My cousin was proud too, can you tell?

Thank you, Donnie, for all you have done. I look forward to your next contest.

gave up on the daily reflections. At least in my journal. I've been incredibly grateful for many things this year so far. I just haven't had the time to catch up on writing. I have bits and pieces everywhere but between facebook, myspace, twitter, and email, I've had very little time to sit down and just write my thoughts. The funny thing is that I am not that needed on any of these sites and could definitely take a few minutes to jot my thoughts down. I think that I'll do so this week. Set up a schedule to write down my thoughts, feelings, and a bit about what is going on inside my head.

It might actually be interesting...I'm not sure yet.

Today I am grateful for the opportunity to have lunch with my mother and sister. I not only had a heart to heart conversation with my sister but was able to make my mother laugh more than once. It was also the first time all three of us spent time together outside of the house. It was a nice change of pace.

Dear Donnie: Bathroom Break

Much like everyone else in New Kids’ land, I owned most of the merchandise and still do, except for the bedding. My mom didn’t want me to go to bed with five guys. We fought over that but she won. My first concert was at Foxboro Stadium. It was so exciting but I sat so far away that I couldn’t really see much and I was so nervous that I could not stand on the bleachers so I saw even less. I remember my mom sent me with her last twenty dollars and told me not to waste the money because that was all she had. When we got to the show the only item I wanted was a tour book but it seemed to me to be a waste of money so I never bought one. I only bought a drink. I did find a section of the paper that had been left behind on the New Kids train that we took home and I took that. When I got home I told her about the book and she asked why I didn’t buy it and I told her, she said “that was stupid, that is why I gave you the money.” I was so upset, I still have the paper I took from the train but now every time I go to any concert I buy a tour book.

This was around the time I was in the 5th grade. At this point in my life we were still taking class trips to the bathroom in school. Two girls at a time would be sent in and when the next two girls were sent in the first two girls were to leave, those were the rules. I had a guy for a teacher so he couldn’t come into the girl’s room. He would send us in two at a time but none of us ever came out. He fell for this every day! We didn’t leave because it was our meeting time, and here we would discuss our favorite topic, the New Kids on the Block. We discussed your music and anything we may have read or heard. This was a difficult time for me and my best friend, Chrissy, because we were the only two girls in the class that were not related to one of you in some way. It turns out; the two of us were the only ones not lying about it. One day, Chrissy had become so jealous that everyone in our “world” was related to one of you that she did some research of her own and learned that she was related to someone who signed the Declaration of Independence. When she made the announcement all of us, including me, looked at her funny. I mean, none of them were New Kids!

Chrissy passed away a few years ago. I wish I could tell her that it really is cool that she is related to someone who signed the Declaration of Independence. I would also like to ask her who it was and apologize for being such a meathead in the fifth grade. I think she knows but I still wish…

Dear Donnie: Call Him What You Want

  • Dec. 22nd, 2008 at 1:20 PM

Dear Donnie,

It was so exciting, I finally had the opportunity to meet you at the Boston meet and greet and I had so many things I wanted to tell you but when I finally got to see you I was only able to tell you that after 20 years “I love you” was all I could come up with, but there is more. I tend to get nervous when I meet people and can’t say what I want/need to say, so I figure the only place I can tell you now is here.

I should probably tell you how we met. I was at my cousin’s house and she brought me into her room. She pointed to a magazine picture that hung on her wall of five boys. She told me, “These are the New Kids on the Block and you have to pick one.” I was eight years old at the time. I had never heard of the New Kids on the Block before, at the time I was still listening to oldies music with my mom. She insisted I pick one because “You cannot have them all.” So I used the only decision making skill that I had and started with…eeny, meeny, miny, moe…but I must have hovered around Jordan too long because the next thing I knew I was in a head lock. She said I could have any one of them but not him. Gasping for air I told her that the blonde one was kind of cute and she loosened her grip just a little and said “Donnie.” I said “You can call him whatever you want if you let me go, he’s my favorite!”

Not too long after that I saw the video for The Right Stuff. I am not sure if it was your smile or your voice but I figured out quickly that, “all that I needed was you.” I have been a Wahlberg fan ever since.

I have more but it will have to wait.

Reading Meme

fly away
What was the last book you bought?
My Horizontal Life by Chelsea Handler

Name a book you have read MORE than once
To Kill a Mockingbird

Has a book ever fundamentally changed the way you see life? If yes, what was it?
The Celestine Prophecy changed the way I looked at relationships. I remember when the book first came out there were religious debates and a lot of controversy surrounding it. I like to explore so I did not feel that reading this book was going to somehow change my faith. It did, however, make me look more closely at the relationships that I had and how they were affecting my day to day life. There was talk of the different energies that people brought and how those energies interacted.

How do you choose a book? eg. by cover design and summary, recommendations or reviews
I never really analyzed my own methods before! What an interesting concept. I used to find interest in certain books by sneaking a peak at what other people were reading on the train. That was one of my favorite parts of commuting. If I saw several people with the same book it would pick my interest enough to check it out at the bookstore on my lunch break. I would also ask others for recommendations or read reviews but my “detective” work on the train was my main method.

Do you prefer Fiction or Non-Fiction?
I am not sure that I have a preference. It sort of depends on my moods. I like to get lost in all kinds of stories and for that moment they are all real to me.

What’s more important in a novel - beautiful writing or a gripping plot?
A gripping plot is important to me in a great book. It would not matter how beautifully written something was if it is painfully boring to read.

Most loved/memorable character (character/book)
I loved Karen Duffy in her auto-biography, Model Patient: My Life as an Incurable Wise-Ass. It is her story about living with Sarcoidosis. I loved that she had such a positive outlook on life and lives for the moment. One of my favorite parts in the book discusses how one year she did all of her Christmas shopping at the Betty Ford clinic.

Which book or books can be found on your nightstand at the moment?
I have several books, some fiction, some puzzle books, and some design related.

What was the last book you’ve read, and when was it?
Come Play with Me, I finished it last week.

Have you ever given up on a book half way in?
Yes, Dr. Phil has that effect on me. If, after 180 pages, you are still telling me that you are going to help me, then I start to lose interest. At this particular point in the book the process should have already begun, at least, in my opinion.

  2. Jealousy is currently killing me.

  3. When I see a shooting star my wish would be that a particular feeling never comes back.

  4. I'd rather be taking photos than working any day!

  5. Certain songs when I hear them make me wanna dance.

  6. If time were in a bottle shake it up and make it interesting.

  7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to going to the gym, tomorrow my plans include shopping for the cruise and Sunday, I want to try something I have never done before!
